Opener and Bullpen Game Betting: The MLB Strategy That Breaks Conventional Lines

The day a one-inning starter ruined my totals model

Mid-September a few seasons back I had a confident over on a game where the listed starter was projected for around six innings. The starter threw exactly one inning. He was an opener – a relief pitcher used to face the top of the order before yielding to a bulk reliever. My totals model had assumed six innings of starter quality and three of bullpen variance. The actual game was one inning of opener plus eight innings of mostly fresh relievers, which is a structurally different game with a structurally different run distribution. The bet lost. Worse, my model was now exposed as not knowing how to handicap a game format that’s becoming more common every year.

Opener strategy and full bullpen games used to be exotic. They’ve become a regular feature of the MLB calendar, especially for teams with thin starting rotations or specific strategic situations. Knowing how to handicap them is now a basic skill, not a niche specialisation.

What an opener actually is and why managers use them

An opener is a relief pitcher who starts the game, pitches one inning (occasionally two), and then yields to a longer-pitching reliever or pseudo-starter for the bulk of the innings. The strategy emerged in the late 2010s, popularised by teams like the Tampa Bay Rays who didn’t have starting rotation depth but had quality bullpens.

The logic is the third-time-through-the-order penalty. Starters facing a lineup for the third time in a game perform measurably worse than first-time-through performance – walks rise, slugging rises, command drops. The opener strategy front-loads the matchup advantage by putting a power reliever against the top of the order in inning one (when he’s first time through), then bringing in a bulk reliever or pseudo-starter for innings two through five (when he’s first and second time through), and using late-inning leverage relievers from the sixth onward.

The result is a game where no single pitcher faces the top of the order for the third time, which is a structural advantage compared to a traditional starter who would inevitably face the top of the lineup three or more times.

Bullpen games are the more extreme version: no nominal starter at all, just a sequence of relievers handling between two and three innings each across the full game. Bullpen games happen when teams genuinely don’t have a fifth starter available, often after doubleheaders, injuries, or scheduling crunches.

Why the totals line gets mispriced

Bookmaker totals models are built primarily for traditional starter matchups. When an opener or bullpen game is announced, the model has to adjust, and the adjustment isn’t always perfect.

The first source of mispricing: the model treats the opener as if he were a one-inning starter, projecting his strikeouts and runs allowed for that inning, and then treats the bulk reliever as a five-or-six-inning quasi-starter. The hand-off between the two is where the model loses information. The actual game flow has the opener facing the top of the order in inning one, then the bulk reliever facing the bottom of the order in innings two and three, then the lineup turning over again. The matchup-specific advantages of the opener strategy don’t always transfer cleanly into the model’s run projections.

The second source of mispricing: the bullpen depth required to run a bullpen game is enormous. Five or six relievers are used in a single game, which leaves the bullpen badly depleted for the next two or three days. The line for the bullpen game itself is usually priced reasonably; the lines for the games immediately following are sometimes underpriced for the bullpen-depletion effect.

The third source of mispricing: opener strategy is associated with weaker overall pitching staffs. Teams that use openers regularly are usually doing so because they don’t have full rotation depth. The aggregate run-scoring environment for these teams is elevated. Bookmakers know this and price it in for the team’s full season totals, but individual game lines sometimes underprice the depth issue when an opener is announced for a specific spot.

The first-five-innings angle, where openers shift the math

F5 markets are the cleanest way to express a view on opener games, but the analysis differs from a traditional starter F5.

In a traditional F5 bet, you’re betting on the starter for both teams. The market is built around the starter’s quality versus the lineup. In an opener F5, you’re betting on the opener for one inning plus the bulk reliever for four innings. The bulk reliever is the dominant variable for the F5 outcome, not the opener.

The mispricing typically lives in the bulk reliever’s quality versus the F5 line. If the bulk reliever is a quality arm whose ERA suggests starter-level performance over five innings, the F5 line for his team should be similar to a normal starter game. If the bulk reliever is genuinely a relief pitcher being asked to extend, the F5 line should reflect the additional risk – and often doesn’t fully.

I check the bulk reliever’s recent appearances explicitly. How many pitches has he thrown in the past three days? Has he started a game before? What’s his pitch arsenal – deep enough to face a lineup multiple times, or a one-trick reliever who depends on a single pitch the opposing hitters will eventually time? The pitch arsenal question is the most underrated input on bulk reliever F5 bets.

Strikeout props in opener games

Pitcher strikeout props need careful handling in opener games. The opener himself usually has a strikeout prop posted at a low number – often 0.5 or 1.5 strikeouts – because he’s only expected to face three to six batters. The bulk reliever may or may not have a strikeout prop posted; some books offer one, some don’t.

The opener’s prop is sensitive to lineup composition. If the top of the order has high strikeout rates, the opener’s K total can clear comfortably even in one inning. If the top of the order is contact-heavy, the prop is harder to clear despite the opener’s quality.

The bulk reliever’s prop is the more analytically interesting market. He’s facing innings two through five or two through six against a lineup that will be on its second and third time through by the late innings. His K projection is similar to a starter’s projection over the same innings, but the bookmaker’s pricing model sometimes underrates his strikeout potential because his historical sample is dominated by relief appearances rather than starter-length outings.

The angle: bulk reliever strikeout overs at fair lines often have positive expected value, especially when the reliever is a high-K guy whose historical relief appearances have produced K rates above his bulk-game projection.

The bullpen game angle: total juice and the sharp position

Pure bullpen games – no nominal starter, just a sequence of relievers – are rarer than opener games but they happen often enough to deserve attention. They’re typically scheduled when a team is in a genuine pitching crisis, usually due to a doubleheader makeup or a string of injuries.

The aggregate run output in bullpen games has trended above league average across recent samples. The reasoning is structural: the relievers used in a bullpen game are typically of lower quality on a per-inning basis than a healthy starter would be, and the constant pitching changes mean a fresh-but-not-dominant arm rather than a settled rhythm.

The over has structural value in bullpen games when the line hasn’t moved meaningfully from a normal game’s total. The bookmaker often prices bullpen games close to the team’s normal total, slightly elevated. The actual run output runs higher more often than not.

The exception is when the bullpen-game team is at a heavy pitcher park with favourable weather. The park and conditions can offset the lower per-inning pitcher quality, and the total settles closer to neutral. Always check the park-and-weather context before betting the bullpen-game over.

The other angle is on the opposing team’s offence. A team facing a bullpen game has a structural advantage – they’re seeing fresh arms rather than a starter on his second or third time through, which sounds like a disadvantage but actually plays to the offence’s favour because of pitch-arsenal predictability. Relievers usually have a single dominant pitch they rely on; once the lineup has seen a reliever once, the second appearance (or against the next reliever with a similar arsenal) becomes easier. Bullpen games tend to score for both teams more than the line predicts.

Where the broader pace context matters

Modern MLB has accelerated meaningfully. Average game time has settled at 2 hours 38 minutes – the third consecutive season at or below 2:40, the first such streak in 40 years. Only three nine-inning games in 2025 ran 3:30 or longer, compared with 391 in 2021. Faster games mean shorter games for relievers, which means slightly less wear-and-tear in opener games and slightly more bullpen flexibility for managers using opener strategy.

The pace shift has made opener strategy more viable than it was even five years ago. Teams that previously couldn’t sustain enough relievers for an opener-game pattern can now do it because each appearance is slightly shorter on average. MLB attendance reached 71,409,421 in 2025, the third consecutive season above 70 million for the first time since 2015 to 2017. The league is healthy, the strategic experimentation is widespread, and unconventional pitching usage isn’t going away.

The pre-bet workflow for opener and bullpen games

The questions to answer before placing any bet on an opener or bullpen game:

Is this an opener with a known bulk reliever, or a true bullpen game with no nominated long pitcher? The former is closer to a normal starter game in terms of analysis; the latter is structurally different.

Who is the bulk reliever and what’s his recent workload? Three appearances in the past four days is a different profile to one appearance in the past week.

What’s the lineup matchup specifically against the bulk reliever’s pitch mix? A two-pitch reliever facing a deep lineup is at a structural disadvantage that grows as the game progresses.

What’s the opposing team’s bullpen state for the rest of the week? An opener game often signals broader bullpen issues that affect the team’s lines for the next two or three days.

Is the line treating this as a normal game or has it adjusted for the format? Compare the posted total against what you’d expect from a normal starter game between the same teams.

The opener and bullpen game format is one of the more structural changes in modern MLB pitching usage. The sharp bettor adapts. The casual bettor either ignores the format and gets caught by mispriced bets, or fades the format reflexively without doing the analysis. The genuine edge is in the middle – understand the format, handicap each game on its merits, and bet the lines that the bookmaker hasn’t fully repriced.

Should I avoid totals on opener games?

No – opener games often produce some of the cleanest totals edges available, but only if you understand the format. The line is built around the opener’s one-inning projection plus the bulk reliever’s bulk-innings projection, and the bookmaker’s model sometimes mishandles the hand-off. Bulk reliever F5 overs at fair lines are a recurring positive-EV bet, especially when the reliever has good strikeout history but is being projected at a lower-than-deserved K rate because of his relief profile.

Is the over the default bet for bullpen games?

Often yes, but not always. Bullpen games tend to produce above-average run scoring because the per-inning pitcher quality is lower than a healthy starter would provide, and lineup pitch-arsenal recognition becomes easier as multiple relievers cycle through. The over has structural value when the line is priced near a normal-game total. The exception is bullpen games at heavy pitcher parks with favourable weather – the park and conditions can offset the lower pitching quality, and the total settles closer to neutral.
